CROMPTON PUMPs – BRIEF HISTORY

In 1878, R.E.B Crompton started R.E.B Crompton & Company. It was merged with F.A Parkinson company to form a new entity called Crompton Parkinson Ltd.
James Greaves, who was the founder of Greaves Cotton & Company, was appointed as a concessionaire. Later in the year 1937, it was established as Greaves Cotton & Crompton Parkinson Ltd.
In the year 1947, an Indian businessman named Lala Karam Chand Thapar bought this company.
On 2nd August 1966, it was rechristened as Crompton Greaves Ltd.
Crompton Greaves is now part of USD Dollar 4 Billion Avantha Group.
In 2015, Crompton Greaves Ltd was demerged into 2 separate business entity, separated into Electrical business and Consumer business.
Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Limited takes care of electrical business, and Crompton takes care of consumer business.

ABOUT LALA KARAM CHAND THAPAR

Lala Karam Chand Thapar bought this Crompton Greaves & Company in the year 1947.
He was born in Punjab in the year 1900. He migrated to Kolkata and started his career as coal trader.
He achieved success in a short time and diversified into the various sector like textile, alcohol, Oriental Bank of commerce, paper business.
He started an educational organization named Thapar Institute, which has grown into a full-fledged university called Thapar University.
He had four sons and died in the year 1963.

WHO IS GAUTAM THAPAR?

Gautam Thapar is the grandson of L.K. Chand Thapar. He was born on 7 December 1960. Brij Mohan Thapar is the father of Gautam Thapar.
Gautam began his career as Factory assistant in one of the manufacturing unit of Thapar Group. His uncle groomed him, and very soon, he learned the tricks of the trade and began to turn around the sick company into a profit-making unit.

The company’s asset had been distributed among many heirs & relative.
On 1 July 2006, he took over as chairman of the group.

He holds the post of the president of Thapar University. Ernst & Young Entrepreneur awarded him in 2008.
